Creole flavour, rhythm & colour
Guadeloupe’s culture blends French, African, Caribbean and Indian influences into something entirely its own — you’ll taste it, hear it and see it everywhere you go.

Guadeloupean food draws on French technique, West African tradition and the island’s own Caribbean produce. Start with accras — crisp little codfish or vegetable fritters, sold everywhere from roadside stands to fine restaurants — and work your way through the rest of the menu.
Gwoka, Carnival and the sound of the island
Gwoka — a style of drumming, song and dance rooted in the island’s African heritage — was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014, and you’ll hear it at léwòz evenings and local gatherings across the island. Carnival, running from January through Ash Wednesday, is the biggest cultural event of the year: costumed parades, brass bands and street parties (vidé) build to a dramatic finale where crowds dressed all in red, black and white “burn” King Vaval, a giant effigy, to mark the start of Lent. If your visit overlaps with Carnival season, don’t miss it.
Where to shop like a local
Pointe-à-Pitre’s covered market, near the marina, is the classic stop: mountains of Scotch bonnet peppers, vanilla pods, cinnamon bark and homemade hot sauces (sauce chien, sauce ti-nain) sold by the same families for generations. Look out too for madras — the bright plaid cotton fabric, tied into elaborate headscarves for traditional Creole dress, that shows up on everything from tablecloths to swimwear — and for local artisan crafts like woven vétiver-grass baskets and pottery.
A bottle from Damoiseau, Bologne or Longueteau — vacuum-sealed for the flight home on request.
Guadeloupe-grown vanilla pods, cinnamon and Colombo spice blends from the market.
Headscarves, napkins and bags in the island’s signature plaid.
A bottle of sauce chien or sauce ti-nain — ask for one that travels well.
