Guadeloupe spreads its two wings around the Rivière Salée: Grande-Terre in the east, flat and ringed by lagoons and postcard beaches, and Basse-Terre in the west, wild and mountainous, covered in rainforest and crowned by the La Soufrière volcano. Staying in Le Gosier puts you exactly at the hinge — everything is within an easy day trip.
From lively to lonely
Start at La Datcha, Le Gosier’s own beach, five minutes from the apartment — lively, lined with bars and lit at night. Then work your way along Grande-Terre’s south coast: the turquoise lagoon of Sainte-Anne, the postcard palms of Bois Jolan, and the surf beach of Le Moule. On Basse-Terre, don’t miss Grande Anse‘s golden sand and the black volcanic beaches near Trois-Rivières.
Hike an active volcano
The “old lady”, as locals call her, rises to 1,467 m — the highest peak in the Lesser Antilles. The trail from Bains Jaunes takes you through cloud forest to a steaming, otherworldly summit; on clear days you can see the whole archipelago. You can even spot La Soufrière from the apartment’s terrace. Bring a rain jacket and start early!
Swim beneath the falls
Basse-Terre’s national park is a UNESCO biosphere reserve laced with trails. Chase the three tiers of the Carbet Falls, take an easy stroll to the Cascade aux Écrevisses, or cross the rainforest on the scenic Route de la Traversée — keep an eye out for hummingbirds and racoons.
Five islands, one archipelago
Right opposite the apartment lies the Îlet du Gosier and its lighthouse — a five-minute boat hop for snorkelling and picnics. Ferries from Pointe-à-Pitre and Trois-Rivières take you to Les Saintes (one of the world’s most beautiful bays), rural Marie-Galante of ox-carts and rum, and the untouched nature reserve of Petite-Terre with its lemon sharks and iguanas.
Snorkel, dive, eat, repeat
Snorkel with turtles in the Cousteau Reserve at Malendure, kayak through the mangrove of the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin, then reward yourself with accras, colombo and grilled lobster at a beachside lolo. Finish with a tour of a rum distillery — Damoiseau on Grande-Terre, or Bologne and Longueteau on Basse-Terre — and taste why Guadeloupean rhum agricole wins gold year after year.
Practical tips
Direct flights from Paris (~8h30); the airport (PTP) is 20 minutes from the apartment.
December to May is the dry season; whale watching peaks January–March. The sea stays 26–29°C all year.
Guadeloupe is France: euros, EU roaming, French (and Creole) spoken. No visa for EU/Swiss citizens.
Rent a car — roads are good and every corner of the butterfly is within 1–1.5 h of Le Gosier.
